Blotter's Reach

A flat shelf of stone above the ink-dark spring, where copyists work and jackdaws steal.

At a glance

Kingdom
III (The Witch's Wood)

Every kingdom has a place where its central obsession lies out in the open, and in The Ink Well that place is a slab of rock. Blotter's Reach is a flat shelf of stone above the spring, grey and moss-patterned, broad enough for a dozen copyists to work shoulder to shoulder and old enough that nobody remembers who first climbed up to write on it. It is not a shrine and not a ruin. It is a table the size of a courtyard, and the vale treats it as one.

The name is a tradesman's compliment. Scribes love the stone for its absorbency — spilled ink sinks into the rock rather than beading and running, so a dropped pot is a smudge instead of a catastrophe, and a page laid flat to dry stays where it's put. Down in Inkhollow the spring runs faintly dark, and the residents have noted the colour of their own teeth for years; the same water that stains them stains the Reach, layer on layer, until the stone itself reads like a page that's been written over a thousand times and never once wiped clean.

Copyists carve as well as spill. Along the edge of the shelf, worked into the rock with a fine quill-point, are words the working scribes left behind — some finished, some abandoned mid-thought. One reads SCRIBE, though frost has pulled two of its letters and left it gap-toothed, so the broad flat stone where copyists work now half-names the very people who use it. Nearby, a copyist once scrambled the name of the thing every scribe fears most and walked off without solving it — six letters, out of order, a small confession left carved in the open. The stone knew the answer. Somebody's hands didn't. It was SMUDGE, of course. It usually is.

The Reach has a resident nobody invited. Twenty feet up a hazel at the edge of the shelf sits a jackdaw's nest — a chaotic construction of twigs, horsehair, and shiny scraps, salvage the bird has spent seasons assembling: a brass buckle, three lead seals, anything that catches the sun. The hazel's own bark is grey and moss-patterned, a near-perfect match for the stone below, so the tree hides its thief in plain sight. It is an excellent perch for a bird building a collection, and an excellent place for a word to end up where it has no business being.

That is exactly what happened. When Yarrow the hedge witch was mid-cure and a strip of bark carrying the one word she needed went missing, the jackdaw was the culprit and the Reach was the hiding place — the missing word twenty feet up a hazel, humming faintly with a static charge, while six of her patients coughed up frogs and waited. Travelers who fetch it back learn what the copyists already knew: on this stone, the words that go missing don't vanish. They just get carried somewhere higher, by something that likes how they shine.

Where you'll find it

Blotter's Reach is the second stop on the path through the region called The Ink Well, in Kingdom III (The Witch's Wood). Come up from Inkhollow — the village below, where the spring runs dark — and the stone shelf sits above you, catching the light off the water. Keep going and the road passes The Stained Lintel, the inn where travelers press a sooty handprint on the doorframe before the trees close in. Most people cross the Reach on their way to see the hedge witch. Some of them stop to read the stone.
