The Chronicle of Epic Words

Oil painting of Marginalia Keep, a squat crenellated stone watchtower whose every block is carved with cheerful doodles — grinning faces, beasts, spirals, suns — a tattered banner flying from its flagpole and wildflowers crowding its base among green hills.

Marginalia Keep

Four generations of sentries guarded nothing, drew everything, and left the truest record in the Scriptorium.

At a glance

Kingdom
IV (The Scriptorium)

The Scriptorium is the kingdom of the official record. Its copy-houses feud over authoritative transcripts, its gate publishes rules that countermand each other by the week, and its overlook still smells of the fires where old texts were burned. So there is a fine justice in the fact that the most reliable historical document in the entire kingdom is a guard tower covered in doodles.

Marginalia Keep was built to watch the river, and for four generations its sentries did exactly that — watched, and watched, and watched, while nothing whatsoever attacked. No siege. No raid. Not one arrow fired in anger, so far as any record shows, and this is a kingdom that keeps records. What the garrison did instead, hour after idle hour, was draw. They carved into the soft stone with penknife and awl: soldiers and river-monsters, grinning faces along the battlements, a sun with opinions, dogs, dragons, at least one sergeant rendered with memorable unkindness. Every stone of the tower now carries something. The merlons wear faces. The doodles have long since jumped the walls of the duty-ledger and colonized the entire building, until the Keep itself became what it always secretly was: the margin, promoted.

The joke has teeth, though, and the joke is this — the doodles are accurate. Bored is not the same as inattentive. Four generations of sentries drew what actually passed below: the barges and their cargoes, the pilgrims, the storms, the strange lights over Erasure Overlook, each rendered in the margins of the duty-ledger while the official columns recorded "no incident" in a dutiful hand. Down in The Copyist's Quarter three houses will sell you three conflicting transcripts of the same charter; up here, the margins simply show you what came by. When a man with a scarred neck led thirty followers through this stretch of country under a blue-and-grey banner, no proclamation announced him — but a sentry drew the banner, horned wolf and all, in the ledger's margin, because the sentries draw everything. Historians of the vale have quietly learned to check the Keep's marginalia first and the official record second, a practice none of them advertises.

Which makes the tower's two small wounds worth reading closely. The name-plaque by the door has lost two letters to a century of idle fingers, so that the one duty-word still legible beneath the accumulated doodles reads G_AR_guard, worn down by the hands of the people doing it. That one is honest erosion, the Scriptorium's ordinary weather. The other is not. In the margin of the old duty-ledger, beneath the sketch of that blue-and-grey banner, the letters of its motto have been carefully scraped away with a penknife — not weathered, not smudged, removed, by someone with steady hands and a reason. The sentries drew everything; someone else, later, edited. Even here, in the kingdom's one unofficial record, a word has been made to go missing on purpose. The current watchmen have noticed. They have responded in the traditional manner, by drawing a picture of it.

A sentry with too much time once scrambled the word for what covers all four walls and dared visitors to unscramble it — six letters, four generations deep, and the only word in the Scriptorium that three copy-houses have never once disputed. Solve it on your way down toward The Blotted Page, where the garrison drinks, and where the walls keep records of their own. And spare a thought, passing under the battlements, for the tower's long lesson: the official record argues, burns, and countermands itself, but a bored honest hand with a penknife outlasts them all. Mostly.

Where you'll find it

Marginalia Keep stands third on the path through Kingdom IV (The Scriptorium), on the cliffs above the river between Vellum Gate and the tavern at The Blotted Page. You'll know it at once: a squat, crumbling watchtower whose every stone, from foundation to battlement, is carved with doodles — faces, monsters, bards, spirals, the occasional unflattering commanding officer. A tattered banner still flies from the pole. Nobody remembers what it used to say, which, around here, is rather the point.
